Book Reviews & Recommendations - Equipment

In order to succeed in photography, you have to be able to operate your camera and other gear instictively. Here are a few books to help those of you who are Nikon shooters.

A History of the Photographic Lens A History of the Photographic Lens
by Rudolf Kingslake
For the true collector, this well illustrated book has more information on lenses than you are likely to find in any other single place. Covers lenses well beyond just the 35mm format, but interesting reading nonetheless.

Hacking Digital Cameras Hacking Digital Cameras
by Chieh Cheng, Auri Rahimzadeh
An interesting book even if you don't dare do most of the projects contained within. There's likely something here though for anyone adventurous enough to try.

Magic Lantern Guides: Nikon AF Speedlight Flash System: Master the Creative Lighting System! Magic Lantern Guides: Nikon AF Speedlight Flash System: Master the Creative Lighting System!
by Simon Stafford
There are two recent guide books to Nikon's new Creative Lighting System, this one and by J. Dennis Thomas. This is definitely the better of the two. It may be just what you need to make flash finally understandable.

Nikon System Handbook Nikon System Handbook
by B. Moose Peterson
Moose is Nikon's number one fan and knows a lot about all the gear. This book gets revised regularly and is packed with info on all the stuff you wished you owned but may never, along with Moose's opinionated commentary. Be forwarned though, you won't find too much that Nikon makes that Moose doesn't like. Indispensable, nonetheless, at least for Nikon shooters.

If you're a Nikon collector, buy this book. Even if you're not (like me), it's an amazing reference for Nikon equipment over the years.

The Digital Photography Book The Digital Photography Book
by Scott Kelby
Scott Kelby has a knack for making complex topics understandable for beginners. Here he tackles how to use your digital camera rather than how to use Photoshop.

The Nikon Field Guide : A Photographer's Portable Reference The Nikon Field Guide : A Photographer's Portable Reference
by Thom Hogan
If you own a Nikon camera, this is definitely a book you don't want to miss. Much better than even the book from Nikon's own Nikon School, this book contains an amazing wealth of information packed into a portable sized reference. Now sadly out of print it seems    Get this book back into print!

The Nikon Flash Guide : The Definitive Speedlight Manual The Nikon Flash Guide : The Definitive Speedlight Manual
by Thom Hogan
It took Silver Pixel Press quite some time to publish it, but it's finally out, and the wait was worth it. Mastering flash photography in the outdoors requires some definite effort. This book should help take some of the trial and error out of the process. Hard to get since it went out of print, but hopefully Thom will re-release it as an eBook at some point.
